Understanding climate
for the benefit of society

From Bergen via Cologne to the Arctic

Erlend Moster Knudsen is a climate researcher and communicator. He completed his PhD within climate dynamics at the University of Bergen and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research in March 2015, having conducted research on the interaction between Arctic sea ice and atmospheric circulation. From there, he literally took off running, being the deputy director of the climate awareness campaign Pole to Paris. Since June 2016, he has worked as a Postdoc at the University of Cologne. The Arctic focus is kept intact, but the language, tools and mountainous surroundings have changed.

Abstract:

The Arctic is opening up, with significant consequences of its local inhabitants and corresponding interest from actors outside of the region. Scientifically, the non-Arctic nation Germany also loves the ice and snow, exemplified by the large research center Arctic Amplification: Climate Relevant Atmospheric and Surface Processes and Feedback Mechanisms, abbreviated (AC)^3 through some scientific creativity. (AC)^3 aims to improve the understanding of the Arctic amplification and its feedback mechanisms. For this reason, a field campaign, involving one icebreaker, two airplanes, some satellites, numerous ground-based measurements and about hundred scientists, is planned for May and June this year. In this talk, we will hear more about the aims of this campaign, as well as about what Dr. Knudsen has been up to scientifically since leaving Bergen.
