Short biography:
Marc is a visualization scientist at the Regional Computing Center of Universität Hamburg, Germany. His research interests focus on the intersection of visualization and meteorology. Marc received the MSc degree in atmospheric science from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and the PhD degree in computer science from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.
Abstract:
Scientific visualization plays a central role for data analysis in meteorology. Besides "classical" techniques (maps, vertical cross-sections, thermodynamic diagrams, etc.), visualization research has in recent years proposed many ideas for novel visually supported analysis techniques. Of particular interest to analyzing atmospheric dynamics are interactive 3D techniques, uncertainty visualization, and feature-based visualization. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the topic, introduce the visual analysis framework "Met.3D" and present recent research from the German Collaborative Research Centre "Waves to Weather", including interactive ensemble visualization and 3D visual analysis of jet-stream and frontal structures.
