Abstract:

High latitude climate effects of large volcanic eruptions

Volcanic eruptions are known to be a major driver of climate variability during the last millennium. Recent high-resolution polar ice core data reveal new insights into volcanic forcing during this period, improving our knowledge of the timing and the amount of sulfur released by past volcanic eruptions. In this presentation, I will focus on a better understanding of high latitude climate effects of large volcanic eruptions of the last millennium, which is currently under discussion. The presentation will cover recent work of CMIP5 model simulations and their volcanic aerosol forcing, stratosphere troposphere coupling, Annular Modes, and ocean-sea ice impacts.
