Abstract:

Toward contribution to the next IPCC report and CMIP6, we have developed the latest version of MIROC (MIROC6) and are ready for starting DECK and endorsed MIPs experiments. Major configuration changes from the previous version (MIROC5) to MIROC6 are implementation of the parameterization of shallow convective processes and increased vertical levels in the stratosphere (TOA height is 0.004hPa). Climatic mean states (for example, summertime precipitation over the tropical Pacific, wintertime mid-latitude westerly jet, and storm track activity) is better represented than in MIROC5, as well as internal climate variability on longer-than-intraseasonal timescales (for example, MJO, stratosphere-troposphere interactions, east Asian monsoon). Together with the climate model development, we have developed initialization systems based on LETKF and IAU for decadal climate predictions. I'll be briefly talking about current research activities of team MIROC toward CMIP6, and we would like to have discussions and information exchanges with researchers in University of Bergen about your progress on CMIP6 preparation, after our talk.
