Fjords in a changing climate

Welcome to an interdisciplinary workshop on the physical oceanography, biogeochemistry and biology of fjords in the past, present and future.

Body

We invite researchers working in fjords for an interdisciplinary workshop 2-5 June 2025 in beautiful Stalheim, Norway.

During three days of presentations, poster session, and with ample of time for informal discussions we hope to bring together physical, biogeochemical, biological and paleo oceanographers to get to know each other and to discuss all aspects of fjord science.

The workshop aims to summarize the current status of fjord research and identify critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of how the fjords and those who live in and of them are affected by – and affect(?) – a changing climate.

Goal of the workshop

The goal is for all participants to work together on integrating the workshop outcome from presentations and break-out group discussions into a review paper that provides recommendations for future fjord research.

We aim to address:

  • Observed changes, past and present
  • Key drivers of change
  • Rate of change and the sensitivity of the fjord environment compared to the open ocean marine systems
  • Relevant physical, biogeochemical, and biological processes
  • Future predictions
  • The role of fjords in a changing climate

in order to:

  • Identify knowledge gaps and set recommendations for future fjord research
  • Give Management recommendations

Abstract submission

We expect the workshop to be able to accommodate 70–80 participants. We hope to have decisions and acceptance letters ready by 15 January 2025.

Abstract submission is now closed, and we have received over 80 abstracts. We will have decisions and acceptance letters ready by 15 January 2025.
