I joined the Bjerknes centre in 2010 and have been working in the field of carbon cycle and Earth system modelling since then. I have contributed to the development of the Norwegian Earth system model (NorESM) and my current research is focused on using ESM simulations to assess different mitigation options and pathways.
A large set of idealized NorESM2 simulations has been completed to assess the Earth system response to pathways that approach zero emissions or that even include a net carbon removal from the atmosphere (net negative emissions). This work was greatly supported by the past Bjerknes strategic project LOES, and the analysis of these simulations is still ongoing. Here, I present results related to the decline and recovery of the AMOC in NorESM2 when emissions are phased out or become net negative. In a second part of the talk, I will discuss the reversibility of the Earth system on centennial time scales with a focus on the carbon cycle.
