Understanding climate
for the benefit of society

Seminar: WCRP Academy, Digital Earths and Safe Climate Landings: The World Climate Research Programme re-invents itself

Beatriz Balino is a science coordinator of the WCRP Coordination Office for Regional Activities (CORA) and will give this seminar on Monday 25 May. The link to the talk will be shared to everyone on Monday.

Context:

The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) leads the way in addressing frontier scientific questions related to the coupled climate system — questions that are too large and too complex to be tackled by a single nation, agency or scientific discipline. Through international science coordination and partnerships, WCRP contributes to advancing our understanding of the multi-scale dynamic interactions between natural and social systems that affect climate. In 2019, the WCRP celebrated its 40th birthday at the AGU fall meeting.

After 40 years of setting the agenda of climate research, the WCRP prepares now for an emerging era of holistic Earth system modelling and seamless weather and climate science with increasing skill and reliability of climate prediction and projections to guide resilience, adaptation and mitigation actions in society. The WCRP science plan for the next decade will support the development of actionable climate information, scientific assessments, educational approaches, and Public communication strategies that require collaborative efforts With multi-sectoral actors in all regions of the globe.

Abstract:

In this seminar I will present (i) research highlights and emerging issues of some of the WCRP activities, and (ii) how the programme will support innovative approaches for the generation and delivery of decision-relevant information and knowledge to meet societal needs.

Although the WCRP's focus will continue to be on providing bedrock climate science, its new strategy adds a pathway of cooperation With relevant user communities (e.g. Climate Services), in the co-Development of decision-relevant information and integrated solutions to the climate crisis at the appropriate scales.
