Learn about past and future climates

In two new animations the Bjerknes Centre goes new ways to communicate about past and future climates.

Body

- The thought behind the animations are to convey / share science based knowledge in a manner that may engage and increase knowledge among the public about climate and related challenges ahead of us, says Communication Leader Jill Johannessen. She has been a pusher for the project and developed the manuscript for the two animations.

The story of climate change during the past 600 years

This animation tells the story of the impact of the sun, volcanos and humans on the climate during the past 600 years. Variations in the Earth’s temperature are not unusual; but what caused the changes in the Earth’s climate during the different time periods? And why has climate change given rise to serious concerns during the past hundred years?

- In developing both animations we have emhasised to tell a story and to visualise the different segments. In addition, we have developed extra material in form of Fast Questions and Answers, enabling the user to read about relevant elements at her or his own pace.

A journey to the climate of the future

Here you can join us on a journey to the climate of the future. The animation is concerned with future development in temperature and its climatic consequences, such as changes in precipitation patterns, the Arctic sea ice and ocean acidification. In this animation we stress interactive elements. The user can choose between estimated changes in four climate parameters and two different emission scenarios, respectively ‘moderate to high emissions’ and ‘Substantial reduction of emissions’. The latter scenario requires the implementation of extensive measures to reduce our emissions.

The animations are based on the model results from the Bergen Climate Model, which has been developed at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.

The animations have been produced in cooperation with Snøball AS and with financial support from Klimaløftet.
