Coordination Office for Regional Activities WCRP-CORA

The Bjerknes Centre is host of WCRP´s new Coordination Office for Regional Activities (CORA).

The Office is set up to identify opportunities, resources and partners to promote regional climate science that address key challenges and objectives in the context of the WCRP Strategic Plan 2019-2028.

WCRP CORA is jointly hosted by the Bjerknes Centre (BCCR) in Bergen and the Climate Service Centre Germany, in Hamburg. The office is set up to:

Promote and coordinate WCRP´s Core Projects and Grand Challenges in line with WCRP Strategic Plan 2019-2028
Contribute to synergy and integration between the various regional activities and WCRP´s Core Projects
Highlight opportunities, resources, and partnerships that can help promote regional climate research within the WCRP
Contribute to the dissemination of WCRP´s activities through brochures and online media
Schedule and organize science-specific meetings and courses conducted by WCRP
Report on plans and progress at annual meetings

CORA at BCCR is led by a regional science coordinator: Beatriz Balino.

About WCRP

The World Climate Research Programme -WCRP- was established in 1980 under the joint sponsorship of the International Science Council (ISC) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). In 1993 the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO also became a sponsor.

WCRP´s mission is to facilitate the analysis and prediction of Earth system variability and change for use in an increasing range of practical applications of direct relevance, benefit and value to society. The two overarching objectives of the WCRP are to determine the (i) predictability of climate, and the (ii) effect of human activities on climate.

WCRP has made enormous contributions to advancing climate science over the past 40 years. As a result of WCRP efforts, it is now possible for climate scientists to monitor, simulate and project global climate with unprecedented accuracy, and provide climate information for use in governance, decision-making and in support of a wide range of practical end-user applications.
