Willem van der Bilt
My research focuses on advancing the potential of high latitude lake sediments as recorders of past environmental change. Most of this work has focused on islands near both Poles: Iceland, Svalbard, Greenland, and the Kerguelen archipelago. I am especially interested in understanding the causes and consequences of glacier-climate change since the last deglaciation (12 000 years ago). To resolve these with high precision, my research has focused on the development and application of two emerging methods in the fields of organic geochemistry (leaf wax hydrology and biomarker thermometry) and medical imaging (Computed Tomography: CT). I am currently leading a research group that is focusing on both of these methods, and their potential to unravel past changes in temperature, precipitation, glacier size, flooding, and storminess.
