Climate Hazards meeting

Fabio Mangini will give a talk on "Towards an understanding of sea-level change in the Arctic between 2011 and 2021”, and as usual we follow this talk with a discussion on how (this) research can reach society.

BCCR Seminar: Unfocus: Why Climate Science Needs Sideways Thinking.

Speaker: Dragana Bojovic from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. Abstract Climate change is not a problem that fits within disciplinary boundaries. Yet, despite growing calls for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, climate science still largely operates within them. So, how far have we really come? This presentation takes a critical look at the promises and realities of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary climate knowledge production. Drawing on the work of the BSC Knowledge Integration Team on co-producing climate services, it explores what happens when different types of knowledge, expertise and perspectives are brought together, and what makes such collaborations succeed or fail. Beyond methods and frameworks, the presentation asks a more uncomfortable question: what would it take for climate science to genuinely think sideways? It considers the role of individual scientists, research cultures and academic institutions in enabling (or constraining?) a shift from producing knowledge for society to producing knowledge with society. Speaker information Dragana is a senior environmental social scientist at Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Earth Science Department, where she co-leads the Knowledge Integration Team. Working with scientists, policymakers, and communities from different parts of the world, she uses transdisciplinary approaches to advance climate knowledge and co-produce services that strengthen resilience.
