PhD Forum: External funding event

Hello everyone,

This month’s scientific event will be on External Funding for PhDs, hosted by Friederike Hoffmann.

If you’re interested in finding out how to apply for funding for travel, mobility, or future post-doc positions then this is the event for you. The event will also feature talks from Helene Stemland and Thomas Thuesen, two previous PhD who managed to secure themselves funding. They will share their experiences and give you further insights into what you can expect during the funding application process.

When: Thursday 14th November, 13:00 – 15:00

Where: Kvartsitten, Realfagbygget

You can sign up for the event here. If there’s a particular type of funding you want to find out about, you can let us know in the sign-up form.

Best wishes,

The PhD Forum Board (Ana, Daniel, Ina, Linda, Marianne, Pushpak and Torunn)

Seminar: Activism, Engagement & Integrity

Dear all,

We are pleased to invite you to a BCCR seminar on activism and the role of researchers, next Thursday at 13:00.

The seminar will begin with the film Sivil ulydighet (Civil Disobedience), which runs for 40 minutes. This will be followed by a discussion featuring three Bjerknesians who are actively engaged in climate issues in various ways.

You can find a teaser for the film here

Our discussion will explore the boundaries between activism and engagement, the role of researchers, trust, and scientific integrity. We are not seeking definitive answers but hope to spark an interesting conversation. Audience questions are welcome.

The panel:

  • Ina Nagler, PhD student at Geo and member of Scientist Rebellion
  • Mari Myksvoll, researcher at IMR and member of the political party Sentrum
  • Lise Øvreås, President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and Professor at Bio

The discussion will be moderated by Gudrun Sylte.

Time & place:

Thursday 14. November kl 1300 – 1500

To order coffee & biscuits, and have a feeling of the interest for this event, please sign up here!

Best regards,

Gudrun Sylte

SAS webinar #5: The Arctic Ocean's carbon cycle

The Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) is a researcher-driven initiative that aims to enhance ongoing ocean monitoring with ship-based measurements, to establish the present states of the Arctic Ocean ecosystem, carbon cycle and associated hydrography. SAS has coordinated a multi-ship survey using an international fleet of icebreakers and research vessels, where more than 25 cruises from 11 different nations collected a set of parameters across the Arctic Ocean in 2020-2022. This comprehensive dataset will allow for unprecedented assessments and provide a unique baseline to track future climate change and its impacts. For more information, please visit our website: https://synopticarcticsurvey.w.uib.no/

This webinar showcases recent updates on carbon exchange between the different pools in the carbon cycle of the Arctic Ocean. Marine carbon originates from river run-off (terrestrial) or air-sea fluxes (atmospheric) and is exported to the deep through large-scale currents where it feeds benthic organisms if there is sufficient light and other nutrients. There will be three solicited talks with room for questions and discussions:

Tracing the origins and fate of freshwater and organic carbon in the lower limb of the AMOC

Caroline Gjelstrup - Postdoc. at DTU Aqua, Denmark

Connectivity between Siberian river runoff and the lower limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation - Limnology and Oceanography

Arctic Ocean CO2 uptake

Sayaka Yasunaka - Professor at Tohoku University, Japan

An Assessment of CO2 Uptake in the Arctic Ocean From 1985 to 2018 - Global Biogeochemical Cycles

Seafloor primary production in the Arctic: Status and trends

Karl Attard - Associate professor at University of Southern Denmark, Denmark

Seafloor primary production in a changing Arctic Ocean - Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The webinar will take place in Zoom. If you would like to join the webinar, please register to receive the meeting link:

Open 25 minute presentations at the ACACIA kickoff meeting

Dear all,

Next week we’re hosting the kickoff meeting for the new ACACIA EU project here at the Bjerknes Centre. To capitalise on this, I’ve asked Frédéric and Linda to give 25-minute presentations which will be open to all BCCR researchers. Hope to see many of you there; snacks and coffee/tea will be served!

Erik Kolstad.

Linda Hirons is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) at the University of Reading, UK. She has a background in Tropical Meteorology with a particular interest in the drivers of weather and climate variability and change over Africa. Her previous work has focused on understanding the sources of sub-seasonal (2-4 week ahead) predictability over Africa. More recently leading to working with communities of forecasters, researchers and decision-makers in Africa towards co-producing reliable and actionable sub-seasonal forecasts for application in Energy, Health, Agriculture and Food Security sectors. She is passionate about seeing advances in scientific understanding lead to improvements in the anticipating and communicating earlier warning of high-impact events to build climate-resilient African communities.

Frédéric Vitart is a Senior Research Scientist at the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). After graduating with a PhD in atmospheric and oceanic sciences from Princeton University, he joined ECMWF in 1998, where he leads the research team on ensemble sub-seasonal forecasts. He has over 20 years of experience in sub-seasonal and seasonal prediction, couple ocean-atmosphere modeling, tropical and mid-latitude meteorology, tropical cyclone prediction. He was co-chair of the joint World-Weather research programme, World Climate research programme sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction project (S2S).
