Dear all,

Next week we’re hosting the kickoff meeting for the new ACACIA EU project here at the Bjerknes Centre. To capitalise on this, I’ve asked Frédéric and Linda to give 25-minute presentations which will be open to all BCCR researchers. Hope to see many of you there; snacks and coffee/tea will be served!

Erik Kolstad.

Linda Hirons is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) at the University of Reading, UK. She has a background in Tropical Meteorology with a particular interest in the drivers of weather and climate variability and change over Africa. Her previous work has focused on understanding the sources of sub-seasonal (2-4 week ahead) predictability over Africa. More recently leading to working with communities of forecasters, researchers and decision-makers in Africa towards co-producing reliable and actionable sub-seasonal forecasts for application in Energy, Health, Agriculture and Food Security sectors. She is passionate about seeing advances in scientific understanding lead to improvements in the anticipating and communicating earlier warning of high-impact events to build climate-resilient African communities.

Frédéric Vitart is a Senior Research Scientist at the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). After graduating with a PhD in atmospheric and oceanic sciences from Princeton University, he joined ECMWF in 1998, where he leads the research team on ensemble sub-seasonal forecasts. He has over 20 years of experience in sub-seasonal and seasonal prediction, couple ocean-atmosphere modeling, tropical and mid-latitude meteorology, tropical cyclone prediction. He was co-chair of the joint World-Weather research programme, World Climate research programme sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction project (S2S).
