Fjords in a changing climate

Workshop 2-5 June 2025
Welcome to an interdisciplinary workshop on the physical oceanography, biogeochemistry and biology of fjords in the past, present and future.
We invite researchers working in fjords for an interdisciplinary workshop 2-5 June 2025 in beautiful Stalheim, Norway.
Please find information on buses and payment further down
During three days of presentations, poster session, and with ample of time for informal discussions we hope to bring together physical, biogeochemical, biological and paleo oceanographers to get to know each other and to discuss all aspects of fjord science.
The workshop aims to summarize the current status of fjord research and identify critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of how the fjords and those who live in and of them are affected by – and affect(?) – a changing climate.
Goal of the workshop
The goal is for all participants to work together on integrating the workshop outcome from presentations and break-out group discussions into a review paper that provides recommendations for future fjord research.
Abstract submission
We expect the workshop to be able to accommodate 70–80 participants. We hope to have decisions and acceptance letters ready by 15 January 2025.
Abstract submission here (deadline 15 November 2024).
We aim to address:
* Observed changes, past and present
* Key drivers of change
* Rate of change and the sensitivity of the fjord environment compared to the open ocean marine systems
* Relevant physical, biogeochemical, and biological processes
* Future predictions
* The role of fjords in a changing climate
in order to:
* Identify knowledge gaps and set recommendations for future fjord research
* Give Management recommendations
Information to participants
The workshop will be arranged at Stalheim hotel, a two hours' drive from Bergen. Travel to Stalheim from Bergen (and back) will be arranged for all participants.
The workshop will start in the evening of 2 June (departure from Bergen during the afternoon) and end by lunchtime at Stalheim 5 June.
The cost of the workshop is NOK 7140 / 6390 in single / double room. The price includes accommodation and all meals at the hotel.
All payments (NOK 7140 / 6390 in single / double room) are due at the hotel on departure.
FLASH PRESENTATIONS of posters
Due to time constraints and the large number of posters, we had to reduce the length of the flash presentations to one minute. While you don’t have time to say much in one minute – it is enough time for the audience to connect your name and topic to a face, so that they know who to catch during the poster session (or in the hallway, at breakfast, in the bar…). We have experience of this format from previous meetings - it works much better than you may think!
Please provide one slide (no animations, please!) for your 1-minute flash presentation of your poster. Deadline for submission will be Sunday June 1st - information about how to submit will follow in a later e-mail.
PRESENTATIONS:
We need your presentation to be uploaded before the start of the workshop program on the day you’re presenting. (That is, before Tuesday 9:00 if you present on Tuesday). You can bring it on a memory stick to the conference room, but we will also set up and send out links to a shared folder.
POSTERS:
Portrait format, no larger than A0.
WALK AND TALK:
We have scheduled a longer break on Wednesday afternoon. We hope that most of you will join us for a walk towards Nålli to enjoy the stunning views, get some fresh mountain air, and chat with your new fjord friends! Bring sturdy shoes and a raincoat! Alternatively, you can join a guided tour at the hotel’s museum (or just chill at the hotel, of course!)
Buses
There will be (free) buses set up to the workshop.

5/6 12:00

The bus ride is 2-2.5h, so please do not book outbound flights leaving earlier than 16:00.
You can sign up for the buses here: Fjord Workshop: Buses to and from Stalheim
