BCCR cross-theme seminar on ‘Teleconnections’.
The cross-theme seminar will feature four separate talks:
- Tomas Torsvik: Sensitivity of the Southern Ocean biogeochemical divide
- Roberto Suarez: The role of multidecadal SST variability in modulating the Mediterranean teleconnection with the Sahel
- Fabio Mangini: The relationship between the eddy-driven jet stream and northern European sea-level variability
- Leilane Passos: Oceanic teleconnections within the North Atlantic and towards the Arctic
Seminar: Kevin Anderson – “The New Denialism”: how CDR and a failure to address equity are seriously undermining the need for deep and rapid mitigation
Name of speaker ;Kevin Anderson
Mini-workshop: Advancements of Machine learning and statistical models in Marine Science
Dr Eurico Noleto-Filho is visiting us until the end of April with a BCCR fellowship and EU TRIATLAS support. As part of his visit, he will be holding two mini-workshops and seminar that may interest many of you.
Seminar talk: “Impact of glacial rock flour on marine productivity and CO2 uptake”.
Jørgen Bendtsen, University of Copenhagen, Globe Institute, section for geobiology, will visit BCCR (as a BVF) during 13-14 March 2023 (Monday and Tuesday). He will give the BCCR seminar talk on 13 March, kl. 14:15, on a presentation with tentative title: “Impact of glacial rock flour on marine productivity and CO2 uptake”.
It is a topic of interest for negative emission technologies (NETs) as a natural analog for combined ocean fertilisation and alkalinisation to assess risks/opportunties and also interesting for paleoceanographers in view of the glacial CO2 drawdown.
Seminar: Development of a Phase-resolving Computer Model for Operational Coastal Flooding Assessment
Name of speaker: Fatima-Zahra MIAHAMI
Seminar: Forecast evaluation at ECMWF

Climate Hazards theme meeting
The next Climate Hazards theme meeting will be on 21st March 10:00-12:00.
The agenda will be:
- Updates from leader group and general info
- 2-3 scientific talks, including:
- Priscilla Mooney – “Understanding precipitation extremes with a multi-feature tracking tool”
- Stephanie Mayer – “The Norwegian Climate Services Centre – what it is (and what it is not)”
- ???
- Fun networking activity 🤔
CThanks, and best regards,

Tropics discussion group meeting
The new discussion group on tropical climate is meeting next Thursday (March 23) in the Bjerknes seminar room from 10-12. The topic for this meeting is ENSO. Everyone interested is welcome to join!
The program for the meeting is
ENSO in present and future, and the recent triple La Niña (Lea Svendsen)
ENSO in the past – how do we know? (Carin Andersson)
ENSO mechanisms: oscillator theories (Lina Boljka)
Tropical basin interactions – Atlantic influence on ENSO (Noel Keenlyside)
Discussion
Decide on next month’s topic
Best,
Lea, Shunya, Nele
Polar theme meeting
Carbon system meeting
We will have our next carbon system meeting March 31st, 1300-1500
The focus for the meeting is the high latitude Atlantic and Arctic Carbon Sink. We have a few presenters signed up already, with tentative titles:
Are Olsen – Non steady state changes in the inventory of anthropogenic carbon in the Greenland Sea
Nadine Goris – Reflections on need for model improvements for the high latitude Atlantic carbon sink
Emil Jeansson – Decadal changes in Nordic Seas carbon inventories + update on DYNASOR activities (possibly)
Meike Becker – Reflections on future research on the North Atlantic Carbon sink.
Let us know if you also would like to present something, talks on the past/present/future are welcome.
All the best
Jörg and Are.
